Several modernists of India, including those who are usually known for their paintings and mixed media works, have delved into the art of sculpture in their careers. Be it the abstract or figurative works, many artists have also explored their signature styles on canvas and translated them in sculptural form. These works are not only indicative of the experimentation of artists in various mediums but also their varied interpretations of their art through the three-dimensional. Showcased here are some such works on offer in AstaGuru’s upcoming Collector’s Choice auction.

  1. Lot no. 70: Untitled by Prodosh Das Gupta

Prodosh Das Gupta is best known for his fluid sculptures that blend both Western and Indian traditional influences. The presented lot, executed in bronze, comes from his abstract oeuvre.

  1. Lot no. 104: Untitled (Ed: 3/7) by K. Laxma Goud

Prominent artist K. Laxma Goud has experimented with several mediums including sculpture throughout his career. This bronze on wood sculpture reflects his mythological and rural Indian inspirations that are evident in his works.

  1. Lot no. 45: Untitled (Ed: 3/9) by Ram Kumar

While artist Ram Kumar is known for his vast, sombre yet impactful abstract landscape works, he also experimented with sculpture making. The presented lot, executed in patinated bronze, is a figurative work by the eminent modernist.

  1. Lot no. 82: Untitled (Ed: 5/9) by Jogen Chowdhury

The master of unbroken lines Jogen Chowdhury creates his characters with exaggerated features, continuous lines and cross-hatching. The above untitled work is executed in patinated bronze and features elements of his signature style.

  1. Lot no. 171: Untitled (Ed: 3/5) by Himmat Shah

Executed in his signature style with bronze and gold leaf, the above lot comes from Himmat Shah’s vast body of work. The sculptor’s most famous works are heads executed in bronze and terracotta.

  1. Lot no. 153: Untitled (Ed: 5/9) by T. Vaikuntam


Inspired by village life and its people, Thota Vaikuntam creates stylized portraits in vivid colours. The presented lot is a sculptural interpretation of the influential artist’s signature style.

  1. Lot no. 175: Untitled by Sankho Chaudhuri

Sankho Chaudhuri’s works are known for being lyrical and experimental, as the artist delved into various mediums throughout his life. The above lot in bronze is one such abstract work by the artist that also reflects his Cubist influences.

  1. Lot no. 179: Untitled by Krishen Khanna

This untitled work executed in bronze comes from Krishen Khanna’s prominent ‘Bandwalla’ series and depicts a band member playing the trumpet, dressed in uniform. Like this sculpture, Khanna creates works that weave narratives in bold colours.

  1. Lot no. 189: Untitled by Gulammohammad Sheikh

The above oil on wood sculpture comes from the oeuvre of Gulammohammad Sheikh. The sculpture depicts a brightly coloured pinwheel-like form displays the artist’s immense command over colour and form.

  1. Lot no. 93: Ganesha (Ed: 4/5) by Lalu Prasad Shaw

Lord Ganesha is an oft recurring character in prominent artist Lalu Prasad Shaw’s works. The bronze sculpture too depicts the mythological character holding a rope, axe and modaks with a rat by his side.

The collection of around 200 lots in the upcoming Collector’s Choice auction traces different periods of Modern Indian Art with exceptional creations by revered names such as Nicholas Roerich, Rabindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, S H Raza, Jehangir Sabavala, Akbar Padamsee, K H Ara, Arpana Caur, Sakti Burman, K K Hebbar, Bikash Bhattacharjee, Ganesh Pyne, Krishen Khanna, Jogen Chowdhury, and Manu Parekh, amongst several other eminent artists.
