international yoga day: a visual odyssey of spirituality in modern indian art

The intertwining relationship between yoga, spirituality, and tantric art is a rich tapestry that weaves together ancient traditions, transformative practices, and the expression of profound human experiences. At its core, yoga is a spiritual discipline that seeks to unite the body, mind, and spirit, leading to self-realisation and a deep connection with the divine. Tantric art, on the other hand, is a visual representation of the esoteric teachings found within tantra, a philosophical and spiritual tradition rooted in Hinduism and Buddhism. Tantra recognizes the inherent sacredness in all aspects of life, including the human body, sexuality, and the pursuit of divine bliss. Tantric art serves as a medium to transmit these profound teachings through intricate symbolism, vibrant imagery, and intricate iconography.

The collection for AstaGuru’s ‘Collectors Choice’ Modern Indian Art Auction includes works by artists who embraced spirituality and tantra practices as profound sources of inspiration in their art. Through their creative expressions, they explored mystical realms, symbolism, and transformative experiences of these ancient traditions, offering an artistic perspective on spirituality and its significance in the modern world. As we celebrate International Yoga Day, here are some works to be showcased in the upcoming auction.

Lot no. 113: Prakriti by S.H. Raza

The presented lot titled ‘Prakriti’ is an illustrious example of S.H. Raza’s exploration of the ‘Bindu,’ which became an iconic element and a unifying motif of his oeuvre. In this painting from the year 1994, the artist has also inscribed the work with a verse in Sanskrit which translates to: “Nature which is complete in itself shall take birth again and again.” S. H. Raza's interpretation of the Bindu, a Sanskrit term meaning ‘dot, ‘point,’ or ‘seed’ surpasses its literal representation. Delving into metaphysical and spiritual dimensions of existence, the ‘Bindu' becomes a powerful symbol, representing the source of creation, the nucleus of energy, and life itself.

Lot no. 34 Untitled by V.S Gaitonde

The presented lot is by artist V.S Gaitonde who is considered to be one of the most distinguished and admired abstract artists of India. From the 1960s, he was deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism, both in life and art. Enigmatic patterns and calligraphic forms appeared in his paintings around this time. This diverted his attention to working with ink on paper, producing works that consisted of non-mimetic calligraphic and hieroglyphic markings.

Lot no. 201: Untitled by Biren De

Biren De, a prominent modernist artist, skillfully merged Indian and Western art traditions in his Neo-tantric works. Initially figurative, his art evolved into abstract and geometric representations. Devoted to the Neo-Tantric style, De drew inspiration from Tantric practices and texts. His artworks featured geometric forms like crescents and mandalas, employing vibrant colours and light contrasts to depict the concept of Shakti, the divine energy.

Lot no. 141: Tree Of Suffering, Tree Of Enlightenment by Arpana Caur

Arpana Caur, the artist behind the showcased work, frequently incorporates mystics, yogis, and spiritual figures into her art. Notably, she portrays Buddha as a symbol of life in her pieces. Carr is renowned for her acclaimed 'Thread of life' series, which explores the concept of time's passage, with the scissor as a recurring metaphorical motif. Her artwork beautifully explores the eternal connection between day and night, capturing the essence of this profound interplay.

Lot no. 125: Mandala of Progression by Om Prakash Sharma

This work is by  Om Prakash Sharma, a revered abstract modernist painter who gained recognition for his numerous abstract paintings, particularly for his experimentation with the Neo-Tantric art movement of the 1960s. Additionally, he created a captivating series of ragamala paintings centred around this theme.

Lot no. 119: Yoni by Kishor Gundigara

The above-presented work is by artist Kishor Gundigara whose works evoke a profound sense of comprehension regarding the universe, power, and the soul. His focus on Shakti (power), Bindu (centre), and the Soul represents the three fundamental pillars of Indian religious beliefs encompassing Tantra. These subjects form the core essence of his artistic exploration, delving into the depths of spiritual wisdom and understanding.
