AstaGuru’s upcoming ‘Manifest’ Modern & Contemporary Indian Art Auction will feature notable works of remarkable modern and contemporary Indian artists. The catalogue includes exceptional creations by Amrita Sher-Gil, Krishen Khanna, Manu Parekh, F N Souza, Arpita Singh, Sakti Burman, S H Raza, M F Husain, Shobha Broota, Ram Kumar, T Vaikuntam, Anjolie Ela Menon, Bikash Bhattacharjee, Jagannath Panda, Yusuf Arakkal, and B Manjunath Kamath, Meetali Singh, among others. The auction is scheduled for September 24-26, 2024.

Following are the highlights from the upcoming auction:

Lot No. 49: Untitled by S H Raza

Born in 1922 in Madhya Pradesh, S H Raza was a prominent figure in modern Indian art. The presented lot is an acrylic on canvas work, executed in 1977 by S H Raza. His works are a reflection of his profound and deep connection with nature and the cosmos. This depiction of the landscape is a fine example of the artist’s preoccupation with utilising colours as symbols.

Lot No. 103: Untitled by T Vaikuntam

This lot is a resinated fibreglass and automotive paint with stainless steel pedestal large-scale work by T Vaikuntam. It displays his signature use of colour and utilisation of women as subjects from rural areas as inspiration. His fascination with women dates back to his childhood, when he was captivated by performances of male dancers and actors who impersonated female characters.

Lot. 179: Untitled by Nikhil Biswas

Born in Kolkata in 1930, Nikhil Biswas was a founding member of the Calcutta Painters Group, Chitrangshu Group, and the Society of Contemporary Artists, Calcutta. The presented lot is an ink on paper pasted on canvas work by the talented artist. He depicted the anguish of the human mind and many of his works reflect his moods.

Lot No. 197: Untitled by K K Hebbar

K K Hebbar was a versatile artist whose work spanned various genres and styles. His oeuvre often featured vibrant colours and dynamic compositions. The presented lot is a mixed media on board work by K K Hebbar, executed in 1968, reflecting his unique way of integrating Indian motifs and cultural elements into his work.

Lot No. 170: Untitled by Manjit Bawa



Manjit Bawa is celebrated for his bold use of colour, rich textures, and a fusion of traditional Indian themes with modernist techniques in his works. His paintings often feature mythological and historical subjects, portrayed in a stylised and expressive manner. The presented lot is an oil on canvas work by Manjit Bawa, executed in 1988.

Lot No. 73: Untitled by M F Husain

The presented lot is an oil on canvas work, executed circa 1960 by M F Husain. These figures, though devoid of facial features, are imbued with a strong presence, highlighting Husain’s ability to convey emotion and narrative through form and colour rather than through facial expression.

Lot No. 222: Janmashtami (Diptych) by K G Subramanyan



This lot is an acrylic on canvas work, executed in 2015 by K G Subramanyan. It reflects the artist's deep engagement with Indian mythology and his ability to reinterpret traditional themes through a modern lens. His work often captured the essence of cultural and religious themes in a unique and thought-provoking way.

Lot No. 219: Three Women by Sakti Burman



Sakti Burman is well-known for incorporating elements of fantasy and dream-like imagery, creating a visual language that is both evocative and poetic. The presented lot is an oil on canvas work, executed in 1961 by Sakti Burman. In this composition, Burman explores themes of femininity and beauty by utilising a vibrant colourful palette.

Lot No. 140: Durga by Bikash Bhattacharjee

Bikash Bhattacharjee was known for his realistic style combined with his understanding of strong emotions and psychological depth. He created various large-scale works to express his appreciation of women. This oil on canvas, executed in 1988 by Bikash Bhattacharjee is a part of his “Durga” series created during 1988-1990s.

Lot No. 207: Untitled by G R Santosh


This oil on canvas by G R Santosh is a significant work created utilising a limited but striking colour palette, combined with dynamic forms and textures. The influential Indian artist was known for his pioneering contributions to modern Indian art. His work frequently delved into spiritual and symbolic realms, drawing inspiration from Indian philosophies and mysticism.
