Piaget - Watches for Sale, Auction Results, Reviews & News
Piaget is a distinguished Swiss luxury watchmaker and jeweler, renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and innovative designs. Founded in 1874 by Georges-Édouard Piaget in the village of La Côte-aux-Fées, the brand initially specialized in producing high-precision watch movements. Over time, Piaget expanded its expertise to create complete timepieces and fine jewelry, establishing itself as a leading name in the luxury watch industry.
Heritage and Craftsmanship
Piaget's legacy is deeply rooted in its commitment to excellence and innovation. In 1957, the brand introduced the 9P movement, one of the world's thinnest manual movements at the time, followed by the 12P automatic movement in 1960. These developments paved the way for Piaget's reputation as a pioneer in ultra-thin watchmaking. In 2014, Piaget unveiled the Altiplano 900P, the world's thinnest hand-wound mechanical watch at just 3.65 mm thick. Building upon this achievement, the brand introduced the Altiplano Ultimate Concept in 2018, measuring a mere 2 mm in height, integrating the movement, case, and crystal into a single unit.
Origins & History
• Founded in 1874 by Georges-Édouard Piaget in the small village of La Côte-aux-Fées, in the Swiss Jura mountains.
Original focus: producing high-precision mechanical movements and components. It was a movement manufacturer long before it became famous for complete watches.
• In 1943, the company name “Piaget” was registered as a trademark. Shortly after, it established a larger manufacture in its home base.
Corporate Structure & Reach
• Piaget is part of the Richemont Group (a Swiss luxury goods holding group owning many high-end watch & jewellery brands).
• Global presence: boutiques all over the world (Europe, Asia, etc.), flagship stores, and authorised dealers. The maison also maintains its own ateliers for jewellery and movement manufacture in Switzerland.
Brand Philosophy & Signature Traits
• Ultra-thin movements are a signature hallmark. Piaget has been a pioneer in producing some of the slimmest mechanical and automatic calibres in the world.
• Strong dedication to craftsmanship in both watchmaking and jewellery. Goldsmithing, gem-setting, precious metals, hard stones, and high jewellery design are integral to the brand.
• Creative design and aesthetics are key. Piaget has often pushed boundaries in design: dials with ornamental stones, unconventional shapes, integrating jewellery artistry into watches, etc.
Collections & Iconic Models
Here are some of the prominent collections and models that illustrate Piaget’s identity:
Collection / Model |
What makes it special |
Altiplano |
The ultra-thin dress watch line; minimalistic, elegant, technical mastery of slenderness. (Often used to showcase record-thin movements.) |
Piaget Polo / Polo 79 |
A luxury sports / casual watch line; the Polo 79 revival underscores the brand’s heritage and style from the ’70s / ’80s. |
Possession, Limelight Gala, Rose |
More jewellery-inspired & glamorous lines; often rich in decoration, gems, artistic details. |
What Sets It Apart
• Combination of technical watchmaking with fine jewellery craftsmanship. Most brands specialize in one or the other; Piaget’s strength is harmonizing both.
• Ultra-thin engineering is not just a gimmick but a core competence. The design freedom this allows (slimmer cases, more elegant styles) is central to Piaget’s identity.
• Strong aesthetic identity: use of gold, gems, playful yet refined designs, decorative dials, sometimes bold colour & shape. The brand balances elegance with artistic daring.
• Heritage & legacy: nearly 150 years of continuous manufacture, innovation, design. That gives credibility and depth.
What to Look for When Buying
• Here are several criteria and checks to perform. These apply whether new, pre-owned, or vintage.
Feature |
What to Check / Why It Matters |
Authenticity / Vendor Source |
- Buy from authorized Piaget boutiques or authorized dealers. Official retailers give warranty cards, certificates. |
Movement |
- Check whether Piaget’s in-house movement or known calibre for that model. Ultra-thin automatic / manual movements are a Piaget speciality. |
Case & Materials |
- Piaget uses precious metals (gold, platinum) often. Ensure metal hallmarks are correct. |
Dial, Hands & Indices |
- Logo: sharpness, print quality, spacing. Misaligned or sloppy logos are red flags. |
Bracelet / Strap & Clasp |
- Solid craftsmanship: solid links (if metal), correct finishing, smooth edges, well-machined clasp with Piaget branding. |
Documentation & Warranty |
- Warranty card, instruction manual, service history (if pre-owned). |
Resale / Value Potential |
- Limited editions, rare models or those with high craftsmanship (e.g. gem setting, tourbillon, ultra-thin) tend to hold value better. |
Price vs Market |
- Be wary of “too good to be true” deals. Huge discounts on new Piaget watches are rare. |
Red Flags / What to Be Careful About
- Logo or text on the dial, caseback or movement that looks fuzzy, misaligned, or inconsistent with official Piaget typography.
- Case or bracelet feels light, or gold plating rubbing off (vs solid gold).
- Movement looks generic or has little finishing. Piaget often has visible finishing or decorations.
- Serial numbers that are poorly etched or don’t match paperwork.
- No paperwork / no service history for expensive pieces.
- If buying vintage: beware refinished or “redialed” dials and aftermarket parts that degrade authenticity / value.
- Very low price compared to market average.
