prolific indian women artists in indian contemporary art

The Indian Contemporary art space has been heavily reflective of artists' socio-political thoughts, values and their need for change. Women artists have been constantly contributing to the vast and ever-growing collection of works that speak of society, personal experience and culture. With their unique perspectives, one is able to see the world through the female gaze but also through their diverse lenses. Presented below are some of the most notable and prolic women artists being showcased in AstaGuru's 'Present Futures' Contemporary Art auction.

Lot no. 16: Neha by Schandra Singh

Neha by Schandra Singh is a part of the artist’s series of works depicting figures in shallow water, presumably on a holiday. The American artist uses a mosaic of colours and differing patterns to create the subject like most of her other works. In the background, you can spot other holidayers and her oft recurring motif, lobsters. Singh’s works are a satirical take on people lazing and relaxing during the current times of unrest.

Lot no. 24: No Man’s Daughter by Rekha Rodwittiya

Rekha Rodwittiya’s oeuvre is massively inspired by the act of living and the complexities that come with it. She explores subjects like discrimination and belonging and often focuses on women and their daily lives. Her experiences, reading, values shape her work which comments on the socio-political scenario of the world. The presented lot is one such notable work by the artist.

Lot no. 67: Untitled by Anjum Singh

Prolific artist Anjum Singh created a vast body of work in her lifetime. While earlier she tended to focus on urban environments, what shapes them and their transient nature, later her works reflected her battle with cancer and the structures within. The presented untitled work too is part of her works that bring together smaller elements in larger structures, creating awe-inspiring forms.

Lot no. 77: Untitled by Bharti Kher

One of the leading Indian contemporary artists, Bharti Kher’s work deals primarily with everyday life lending to it a sense of magical realism. Her surreal works use found objects as the medium, a signature being the bindi that has found admirers throughout the world. With these works she attempts to explore the relationship between the material and the metaphysical. With both solo and group shows held globally, Kher has made a mark in the contemporary art world unlike any other current Indian artist. The presented mixed media work is a phenomenal example of her work with bindis.

Lot no. 98: Yours Sincerely by Hema Upadhyay

Known for her mixed media installation art and photography, Hema Upadhyay explores subject matter such as urbanity, gender and migration. She was heavily inspired by her country and the cities within it. The presented lot is testament of the artist's love for small details and ornate patterns.
