Revisiting The Art Deco Era Through Jewellery
Kaavya Pillai | 14 Oct, 2022
The term Art Deco was coined during the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, which was largely devoted to the arts of jewellery. This dramatic transformation was set in motion during the era of the first world war in Europe. Women had to forgo their layered and complicated outfits in favour of simple dressing that allowed them to do industrial work in absence of men who were on the war front. This era also heralded a resistance against the excesses of the previous European monarchies. Consequently, this change also impacted the jewellery styles. Called “style moderne,” this type of jewellery with symmetric and structured geometric lines continues to be highly sought after by collectors even today. Present day contemporary jewellery designers too find inspiration in the iconic visual design movement.
Presented below are some of the most important Art Deco and Art Deco-inspired jewellery lots showcased in AstaGuru’s upcoming auction.
Lot no. 110: An Impressive Pair of Art Deco Bajubands
This impressive pair of bajubands is a rare find as it amalgamates a typical Art Deco design with a traditional Indian piece of jewellery. Set with fine quality calibre-cut Burmese rubies and old-cut diamonds, the pair is created in a beautiful chevron design.
Lot no. 100: An Art Deco Diamond Ring
The breathtaking ring is set with a central old European cut diamond that is flanked by four diamond baguettes, all mounted in platinum. The symmetry in design is indicative of the ring belonging to the Art Deco era.
