Valay Shende – Profile, History, Paintings & Art Style
Yungming Wong | 6 May, 2025
Valay Shende (born 15 September 1980, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India) is a prominent contemporary Indian sculptor and multimedia artist known for his innovative use of materials and socially conscious themes. He holds a Diploma in Art Teaching from Government Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya, Nagpur (1999), and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai (2004). Shende completed an artist residency at the Open Air Program, Point Éphémère, Paris, in 2006. He currently lives and works in Mumbai, where the urban landscape and social fabric significantly influence his artistic practice.
Early Life and Education
Shende was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra, and developed an early interest in art. After completing his diploma in art teaching, he moved to Mumbai for advanced studies in sculpture. His academic journey culminated in a BFA from Sir J.J. School of Art, one of India’s most prestigious art institutions.
Artistic Career
Valay Shende’s career is marked by a multidisciplinary approach, combining sculpture, video art, photography, and installation. His work addresses the complexities of contemporary urban society, often focusing on issues such as migration, economic disparity, and the everyday struggles of the common man. Shende’s art is characterized by its meticulous craftsmanship and innovative use of materials-most notably, hundreds of shiny metal discs, pocket watches, and copper-plated fiberglass, which together create life-sized, iconic forms.
His works have been exhibited widely in India and internationally, including prestigious venues such as the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum (Mumbai), Tate Modern (London), MAXXI (Rome), Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon (France), and the Seattle Art Museum. He has also participated in major biennales and art fairs, including the Kuandu Biennale (Taipei), India Art Fair (New Delhi), and exhibitions in Zurich, Paris, Miami, and Hong Kong.
Paintings & Notable Works
While Valay Shende is primarily celebrated for his sculptures and installations, his practice also incorporates video art and mixed-media works. His art is recognized for its narrative depth and symbolic resonance, often transforming everyday objects and figures into powerful social commentaries.
Key Works and Installations:
Migrating Histories of Molecular Identities: This exhibition features sculptures constructed from molecular discs of metal, representing the fragmentation and reconstruction of identity in a rapidly changing society. The project was showcased at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai.
TRANSIT (2011): A large-scale truck installation displayed at the Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon, France, symbolizing the movement and labor of India’s working class.
Dabbawala Sculpture: A 13-foot-tall permanent installation at Mumbai’s Haji Ali, depicting the city’s iconic lunchbox delivery men. The work uses hundreds of metal discs to form a life-sized figure, highlighting themes of migration, labor, and urban life.
Bhaiya Indian: A six-foot copper-plated fiberglass sculpture of a security guard with eight arms, each holding different objects, reflecting the multifaceted roles and burdens of the working class.
Buddha Right, Mark Wrong: A two-part installation featuring a car covered in multinational logos and a gold-plated Buddha, commenting on materialism, spirituality, and global capitalism.
Other Works: Shende’s art often features motifs such as cattle, scooters, hanging clothes, and irons-everyday items reimagined as metaphors for globalization, migration, and economic imbalance.
Valay Shende’s art style is distinctive for its:
Material Innovation: He is renowned for constructing sculptures from small metal discs, pocket watches, and unconventional materials, creating a fragmented, pixelated effect that symbolizes the molecular structure of society and the individual.
Narrative and Social Commentary: Shende’s works are deeply rooted in the socio-economic realities of contemporary India. He explores the dichotomy between modern industrialization and traditional values, often highlighting the struggles and resilience of the common man.
Symbolism and Metaphor: Everyday objects are transformed into powerful symbols, allowing Shende to address complex themes such as migration, labor, globalization, and economic disparity.
Multimedia Approach: Beyond sculpture, Shende integrates video art and installation, expanding the boundaries of traditional sculpture and engaging viewers in multidimensional experiences.
Life-sized Realism: Many of his sculptures are life-sized, enhancing their impact and relatability, and inviting viewers to confront the realities they represent.
Exhibitions and Recognition Shende’s work has been included in numerous prestigious exhibitions and collections worldwide, including:
Solo Exhibitions: ‘Migrating Histories of Molecular Identities’ (Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai), ‘From Day to Day’ (Opera Gallery, Paris), ‘Indian Encounters’ (Galerie Kashya Hildebrand, Zurich).
Group Shows: ‘City Dwellers: Contemporary Art from India’ (Seattle Art Museum), ‘Indian Highway’ (MAXXI, Rome), ‘Between Myth and History’ (Tate Modern, London).
Legacy and Influence
Valay Shende is regarded as one of the most innovative sculptors of his generation. His ability to transform mundane symbols into poignant social commentary has established him as a leading voice in contemporary Indian art. Shende’s work continues to inspire dialogue on the challenges and aspirations of modern society, bridging the gap between art, craft, and social consciousness.
Valay Shende’s art stands as a testament to the power of innovative materials and socially engaged practice, making him a significant contributor to the discourse of contemporary art in India and beyond.
