The practice of astrology can be traced back to hundreds of years ago going as far back to Greek and Roman mythology and culture. With its own association to different symbols, animals, myths, and folklore, every astrological sign is unique. With the ‘Present Future,’ Contemporary Art Auction around the corner, we decided to pick 12 artworks from the auction selection that represent every star sign. Here they are!

Aries, March 21–April 19

Aries is ruled by planet Mars which makes them courageous and competitive. With a fiery temperament, these people are passionate about their ambitions and their personal relationships.

Lot 2: A Knowledge Undimmed By Illusion by Suryakant Lokhande

Acclaimed for his striking experimental work created with a play of different media, Suryakant Lokhande draws his inspiration from pop art. He renders his vision of this rural and urban hybrid culture with high-gloss oil on canvas. Given that his subjects, adopted from the real world, are liberated on the canvas with a voice of their own makes this a perfect selection for an Aries personality.

Taurus, April 20–May 20

Ruled by planet Venus, the Taurus sign thrives in luxuriant environments abundant with beauty and pleasure. Extremely perseverent by nature, people with this Zodiac sign are determined to achieve their goals.

Lot 63: Untitled by Viraj Naik.

A proficient printmaker, Viraj Naik is very well-known for his drawings, etchings and sculptures of hybridised subjects that are inspired by mythology and folklore. Amalgamating the human and the animal in his works. Taurus is symbolised by Bull as seen in this artwork which signifies a Taurus.

Gemini, May 21–June 20

Symbolising air and ruled by planet Mercury, Geminis are always bursting with new ideas and thoughts and are ready to absorb whatever knowledge comes their way. As they are represented by twins, they have a layered personality that they don’t often fully reveal. Seen here are entwined twins which makes this artworks reminiscent of Geminis.

Lot 75: Designer Babies by Chintan Upadhyay

Chintan Upadhyay is noted for crafting controversial and sharp pieces that are certainly tongue-in-cheek in their critiques of society. Babies, his characteristic leitmotif, serve as both a symbol and a surface on which meaning is built based on their unique needs.

Cancer, June 21–July 22

A water sign, cancers are ruled by planet Moon which often tends to make them very emotional. While they thrive best in social settings, they take time before opening up to people and are easily impacted by the vibe and energy around them.

Lot 96: An Intimate Interior By The Sea by Nikhil Chaganlal

Nikhil Chaganlal has a complete mastery over creating vibrant colourful interior landscapes that are often autobiographical in nature. Reminiscent of childhood homes, these interiors are alive with objects, elaborate furnishings and express a vulnerability that is complemented by layers of decadence and fantasy. Depicting a beautiful home, desired by the Cancerians, this artwork is a perfect complement to people from that sign.

Leo, July 23–August 22

Fiery to the core, Leos know how to live life to the fullest and on their own terms. They are always ready to take on challenges which makes them perfect for leadership roles. With big hearts, Leos are extremely loyal in all their relationships.

Roy Thomas’ works are deeply inspired from his immediate surroundings. He seeks to represent the feelings of angst and turmoil as experienced by the common people due to the corrupt socio-political environment of the country. This painting depicts a Lion which is the symbol representing Leo.

Virgo, August 23-September 22

Virgos are extremely meticulous and take an in depth approach towards solving problems. Their demand for perfection can often be extreme which can make them extremely critical of the situation at times.

Lot 31: The Mute Prophet Never Lies by Rekha Rodwittiya

Primarily a painter, Rekha Rodwittiya is known for her celebration of the female form in intimate domestic settings which are often rendered in bright colours and heavily embellished with various elements of mythical and traditional motifs. The meticulous and detailed portrayal of the table in this painting is akin to the dedicated nature of Virgos.

Libra, September 23–October 22

Librans possess a great aesthetic sensibility and love to surround themselves with beauty and harmony. Librans also possess great communication skills and have a great sense of balancing their emotionality and intellectuality.

Lot 103: A Letter To My Love by Bharti Kher

Titled ‘A Letter To My Love’ this work executed in the artist’s signature style with the use of ‘Bindi’ for which she is widely renowned. It first started appearing in her work in 1995 and since then, has become a leitmotif, through which she speaks to the world. The exhilarating colourful beauty of this artwork is sure to resonate with Librans.

Scorpio, October 23–November 21

Passionate and cunning, Scorpios have an effortlessly charming behavior that attracts people towards them. Also said to be inclined towards sensuality, they crave physical and emotional intimacy.

Lot 69: Desire Series : Desire - 2014-1 by Vijender Sharma

Vijender is a spontaneous artist who works with acrylic and watercolours. He rarely prepares to create his works. His creativity flows with a mind of its own from the moment he picks up the brush. When asked about his process, he says, ‘’Art is a way to display our inner self with colours or any other way. I can feel all the colours around us and colours are the immense magic of life." This work emanates a mysterious feeling that will make Scorpions connect to this painting.

Sagittarius, November 22–December 21

Known for their quick wit and spontaneous impulses, Sagittarians refused to be bound by rules and conventionality. With their cheerful disposition, they often emerge as prime entertainers in social gatherings.

Lot 14: Cloud Hunter by Anju Dodiya

Anju Dodiya is renowned for her ‘fictional self-portraits’ that explore the conflict between the inner self and external reality. Her works, often autobiographical in nature, give the viewer a glimpse into the life of the protagonist and reveal a process of self-discovery and introspection. This painting depicting an archer perfectly symbolises the Sagittarius sign.

Capricorn, December 22–January 19

Extremely ambitious and diligent, Capricorns approach all their goals with serious discipline. Due to their sense of practicality and competitive nature, Capricorns can come across as unsociable at times. However, this is also balanced by their great sense of humour.

Lot 99: Untitled by Heeral Trivedi

Graduating in Painting from M.S.U, Baroda in 1995, Trivedi completed a Masters in Creative Painting from the same institution in 1997. Solo exhibitions of her work include "Nurturing", Gallery Chemould, Mumbai (2002) and `Quasi-Perceptions`, Prithvi Gallery, Mumbai (1999). Trivedi has also appeared at several group shows over the years. The quirkiness of this painting is a reminder of the interesting personalities people from Capricorn sign are known for.

Aquarius, January 20–February 18

With unwavering faith in their beliefs and ideologies, Aquarians often revisit various concepts to find out their own interpretations of it. At the same time, they enjoy being social and present an eccentric and non-conformist personality to others.

Lot 16: Passage to Mansarovar by Arunanshu Chowdhury

Arunanshu Chowdhury explores the theme of historical memory portraying his subjects across multiple mediums such as acrylic on canvas, marble dust on fibreglass, and watercolour. His works are a reaction to the violent nature of society and emanate a feeling of intense vulnerability. Heavily influenced by the politics of current times, Chowdhury uses his art as a means of expressing his anguish at the frivolous nature of contemporary society. Depicting a waterbody makes this painting an apt representation of Aquarius zodiac sign.

Pisces, February 19–March 20

With an inherent connection to the mystical and spiritual world, Pieces thrive with a creative mind and kindest hearts. They are often excellent friends and enjoy a vivid social life.

By stimulating nostalgic memories and the people’s playful mind filled with curiosity, Sudarshan Shetty escapes from the phenomenon that homogenizes the world and deftly plots to do away with the existing value system. This painting depicts a fish which is the symbol representing Pisces.
