Amongst 200 works with affordable prices for new collectors as well as old the Astaguru Sale has a slew of wonderful works for the art aficionado.
In her drawings Sher Gil has perfect proportions of the feminine form and adds a luscious stroke of seduction. The lithe lines tell us of her love for drawing and her strength in both elegance as well as expression. This charcoal celebrates the feminine form with deep fervour, indeed the figure is of an older woman but it has expressive characteristics that endure. Amrita the aunt of the brilliant Vivan Sundaram set the genesis of great art in India.
“She was denied old age, bleak or otherwise, but neither her exuberant, magnificent self, nor the work it made, contained anything for which she needed to apologise. Time has passed, and her art endures.” (V. Sundaram ed., Amrita Sher-Gil, A Self Portrait in Letters and Writings, p. xiii).
Jamini Roy’s Dancing Gopini is a stellar work for its alluring contours and the earth toned colours that Roy uses. Roy’s Gopi is created in his style of formalist pictorial language, the sari-clad woman, is an epitome of grace and the iconic reflector of the Indian cultural fabric of rituals. Roy was a great believer in the fact that ’true’ art did not consist of copying nature, but in offering the essential human form in all its integrity of naturality.
