Hemen Mazumdar work auctioned for Rs 3.7 crore

KOLKATA: Hemendranath Mazumdar’s oil-on-canvas depicting Radha and Krishna, which went under the hammer, has fetched more than double its estimated price. While the estimated price was Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore, it got auctioned at Rs 3.7 crore.

This work shows how Mazumdar employed the effects of chiaroscuro and reflected light to depict Radha and Krishna in a night scene.

At the same auction was Bikash Bhattacharjee’s ‘Resuscitative Mythic Man’. It appeared in an auction for the first time and was acquired at Rs 2 crore, which is also more than double the estimated price of Rs 50 lakh-Rs 70 lakh. Bhattacharjee’s work was showcased at an exhibition titled ‘Indian Section: First Triennale, India’ held at Rabindra Bhavan and National Gallery of Modern Art, in 1968. Another untitled work by Bhattacharjee depicting ‘bastusaap’ was acquired at Rs 28.5 lakh.
