Charan Sharma
Charan Sharma (Born 1950) is an Indian modern and contemporary artist recognized for his architectonic sensibility, meditative imagery, and richly detailed spiritual compositions.

Born in the temple town of Nathdwara, Mewar, Rajasthan, into a family of artists, Charan Sharma completed a Bachelor of Arts from Rajasthan University in 1969, a Master of Arts in Drawing and Painting from the University of Udaipur in 1974, and a postgraduate diploma in graphics from the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai in 1976.

Early in his career, his work was heavily influenced by the architecture, historic ruins, and rustic heritage of Rajasthan, frequently depicting the structural interiors and exteriors of ancient palaces alongside heaps of pebbles and traditional toys. Over time, his style shifted toward a meditative ethos, exploring deep spiritual motifs, iconic configurations of Lord Krishna and Shrinathji, and prominent series focused on Lord Buddha and saffron robed monks, such as his acclaimed Enlightenment and Upasthiti series. His style bridges traditional Indian iconography with a modern contemporary palette, often incorporating rich textures and gold leaf accents.

Throughout his career, he has exhibited extensively through solo and group shows across major Indian cities and international venues, including Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Vienna, and Budapest. His participation includes shows at the United Nations Womens Guild in Vienna, the International Print Biennale, the International Experimental Art Exhibition in Budapest, the Glenbarra Art Museum in Japan, and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai. Charan Sharma has received several honors, including the Fresco Mural Award at the Asian International Trade Fair, the Painting of the Year Competition Award from the United Overseas Bank in Singapore, the Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi Award, and the Maharana Mewar Foundation Award.

He is also the author of the book Brushing the Spirit: The Magical Art of Charan Sharma, has designed and illustrated books including a biographical work on J. Krishnamurthy titled The Thousand Moons, and has directed a film on his hometown titled Astha ke Ascharya. He lives and works in Mumbai with his artist wife Nimisha Sharma.
