On February 10, 2024, the art world bid farewell to one of its most distinguished artist A. Ramachandran, who passed away in Delhi at the age of 89. A visionary artist, educator and storyteller, A Ramachandran’s contributions to Indian art remain unparalleled, spanning decades of creative evolution and deep cultural engagement.

Early Influences & Artistic Awakening

Born in Attingal, Kerala, A. Ramachandran’s journey into the world of art was shaped by an unexpected encounter with Ramkinkar Baij’s iconic sculpture Santhal Family. This moment proved transformative, leading him to Santiniketan on a scholarship, where he studied under the guidance of eminent artists such as Benode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij. Immersed in the philosophies of Rabindranath Tagore, he embraced an artistic approach that prioritized creative freedom and an intrinsic connection to nature.

A Shift From Darkness To Celebration

Ramachandran’s early works were deeply rooted in the socio-political realities of his time. His arrival in post-Partition Kolkata exposed him to widespread suffering, which found expression in his paintings. Notable works such as Kali Puja and End of Yadavas depicted themes of violence, despair, and existential turmoil. However, the communal riots of the 1980s in Delhi marked a turning point in his artistic vision. Moving away from depictions of catastrophe, he turned toward a celebration of life, nature, and cultural heritage. Inspired by Kerala’s lush landscapes, temple murals, and the humanistic ethos of Santiniketan, his later works radiated vibrancy, mythology, and a deep reverence for tradition.

An Educator & Advocate for Art

In the 1960s, after relocating to Delhi, Ramachandran played a pivotal role in shaping art education in India. He joined Jamia Millia Islamia and, alongside artist Paramjit Singh, was instrumental in establishing the Faculty of Fine Arts. His dedication to nurturing young artists was matched by his passion for children’s literature, a pursuit he explored with his wife, Chameli. Together, they authored and illustrated books that wove traditional artistic elements into engaging narratives, emphasizing the role of nature and storytelling in shaping young minds. He often lamented the modern world’s growing disconnect from these fundamental experiences.

A Lasting Artistic Legacy

A. Ramachandran’s body of work stands as a testament to his unwavering belief in the richness of India’s artistic heritage. His paintings, murals, and illustrations seamlessly bridged the past and present, intertwining mythology with contemporary sensibilities. Through his art, he invited viewers into a world where nature and humanity coexisted in harmony, where traditional aesthetics were reimagined with a modern perspective.

As an artist, educator, and storyteller, A Ramachandran leaves behind a profound legacy—one that continues to inspire and reaffirm the timeless value of Indian artistic traditions.
